Mediation
Berkeley Mediator Serving Alameda and Contra Costa Counties
Mediation provides an alternative to litigation. In family law, most mediators are experienced family law attorneys. However, it is important to understand that a mediator does not serve as either party’s attorney and does not represent either of the parties in mediation. The mediator’s role is to explore whether the dispute can be resolved by agreement.
Mediation works well for parties who believe that they may be able to reach agreement on some or all issues with the assistance of a mediator. Mediation does not work well when one party perceives an advantage in the relationship, or an advantage in delaying resolution of the matter. An ethical family law attorney will recommend mediation at any time it seems appropriate.
